Q: I upgraded the RAM in my computer a few months ago. Now I often I get a blue screen with an error message that says a problem has been detected and that a dump of the physical memory is beginning. The computer then restarts. Any suggestions?

— Ronnie Parks

A: Try removing the additional RAM you added and see if the problem goes away. If it does you've identified the problem. It's possible that the chips you purchased are defective, or are not the right type for your computer. If removing the additional RAM solves the problem, return the chips and get working replacements.

The problem may have nothing to do with the added RAM, but it's smart to eliminate the most likely cause before trying other fixes.

Q: What do I do when Windows System Restore can't restore the machine? Any ideas on a easier fix for this other than reformatting the entire hard drive?

— Jim Entrup

A: Are you using any of the Norton products? If you are using Norton Security, try turning that program's protection off and trying again. I see, from a Google search, other users who are reporting problems using Windows Restore while Norton Security is active.

There are other possible causes, including a hard disk so full it can't handle restore or errors made setting up restore.

One tip that applies to everyone: Keep your hard disk backed up regularly on an external hard disk (highly recommended in any case) and you can use it to restore any lost data even if Restore doesn't work.

Q: I have been getting my print cartridges refilled for my Canon printer, which is 10-12 years old. A friend said she began having trouble with her printer and was told it was because she was using refilled cartridges. True, or not?

— Barbara Byrd

A: Well, first, it's rare for an ink jet printer to last that long anyway. Believe me, if refilled cartridges were hurting the printer it would be dead by now. Many that use regular cartridges don't last that long.

So my message? Don't worry. And if the printer does stop working my guess is the cause would be old age, not refilled cartridges.
